They came by night

The time of abducting spirits
Or so some of the
Cheyenne people thought.
Hard to balance the things
Of the spirit
With police officers, social workers
Well intentioned foster parents
And van couriers who
Kept their mouths shut
Wallets fattened.
Some lawyer at his desk
Taking the final review
Of adoption papers
Never divulging
The tears in the kidnapping.
Just a couple of Injun pups
Who will ever know, or care?
